Notebook Computer ProcessorsNotebook PC's now use processors just as fast as those found in desktop PC's, in fact many notebook computers use desktop processors such as the Pentium 4 due to the faster 800 MHZ front side bus and lower cost. Aside from the above bit on desktop CPU's in notebooks, here is a quick list of who makes what in the mobile notebook processor arena. Use the menu on the left or click below to get more information on each.
Most mobile processors are based on the same design as their desktop counterpart but have had thermal and power properties tweaked for notebook use. The few exceptions would be Pentium M, Efficeon, and Crusoe which have all been designed with notebooks in mind. On the x86 side the Pentium M, which is used in Centrino Notebooks, would be the most desirable notebook processor in terms of balancing battery life and speed. Apple iBooks and Powerbooks are also very good when it comes to battery life and speed. Efficeon and Crusoe processors from Transmeta are usually found in ultra portable notebooks.
