ATI Mobility Radeon Series - Notebook Video Cards

The mobility radeon series has been around for awhile now, performance and multimedia features have always been a strong point with ATI hardware.

ATI mobility radeon video cards use power saving technology called PowerPlay which adjusts voltage and clock speed depending on user activity and whether or not the notebook is plugged in or using battery power. The latest PowerPlay version can also shut off parts of the graphics chip that are not in use and lower the notebook screen refresh rate to extend battery life even more.

High End:

Mobility Radeon 9800

ATI's current flagship notebook video card which is built around their X800 graphics technology. The better architecture provides a tremendous boost to the high end mobile gaming market with speeds anywhere from 30% to 90% faster than the Mobility 9700. The Mobility Radeon 9800 supports Directx 9.0 and is manufactured using the Low-K process.

Mobility Radeon 9700

The mobility radeon 9700 claims up to 30% faster speeds with approximately the same battery consumption as its predecessor the Mobility Radeon 9600 due to a more advanced manufacturing processed called Low-K Technology. The 9700 is otherwise identical to the 9600 when it comes to features such as Directx 9.0 support, Powermizer 4.0, etc.

Mobility Radeon 9600

The first to offer really great 3D performance in notebook computers, the mobility radeon 9600 raised the bar for notebook gaming expectations. Directx 9.0 support and readily available in many notebooks today, probably the minimum one should consider if gaming is a high priority and near the top of your list of things you want to do.

Mid-Range:

Mobility Radeon 9000 / 9200

The Mobility Radeon 9000 and 9200 support up to Directx 8.1 due to older core architecture than the above radeons, performance is good if you're a casual gamer and would just like the ability. The 9200 is identical to the 9000 except supports 8x AGP (9000 supported up to 4x AGP) and sometimes has faster clock speeds.

Low End:

Mobilty Radeon 7500

Still available in many notebook computers due to low cost, great multimedia capability, and low power requirements. Otherwise quite outdated since it only supports Directx 7 and is not very fast in 3D games.

Mobile Graphics Workstation:

Mobility FireGL T2

The Mobility Fire GL T2 is for mobile workstations aimed at 3D modeling / rendering and CAD engineers using professional 3D design applications. Although based on the same core as the above 9600, the Fire GL T2 is faster and better suited for professional applications due to optimizations in certified drivers which also provide more accuracy and stability.
