Nvidia Geforce FX Go Series - Notebook Video Cards

Nvidia offers notebook video cards which are good for multimedia uses, 3D games, and 3D graphics design. Performance varies but top end parts(Go5700/Go1000) are currently about equal with ATI's Mobility 9600/9700 offerings.

Nvidia's power saving technology is called Powermizer and very similar to ATI's solution in functionality. It can detect when the notebook is plugged in or using battery, automatically adjusts voltage and clock speed depending on user activity, shuts off parts of the graphics processor not in use, and the latest version can even control notebook screen brightness.

High End:

Geforce FX Go5700

The Geforce FX Go5700 is much improved over the Go5600 line, besides being clocked faster it also has three vertex units (vs one on the 5600) and new features such as Ultrashadow and Intellisample HCT. The Go5700 also runs at two different speeds, performance mode at 350mhz and desktop replacement mode at 450mhz, notebook manufacturers may choose one of the two speeds or switch between both depending if the notebook is plugged in or on battery power.

Mid-Range:

Geforce FX Go5650 / 5600

A good performer and supports DirectX 9.0, performance falls between an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 and 9200.

Geforce4 4200 Go

Very good performance in older games and benchmarks since it only supports up to DirectX 8.0. Almost twice as fast as the Mobility Radeon 9x00 series in some games but harder to find since the FX Go5x00 series is now available.

Low End:

Geforce FX Go5200

The Go5200 may support DirectX 9.0 but is too underpowered to take advantage of it, not a bad choice for a well rounded multimedia notebook where gaming isn't a concern.

Geforce4 460 Go, 440 Go, 420 Go

Based on the Geforce4 MX line of cards for the desktop, the Geforce 4 4x0 line of graphics chips for notebooks supports up to DirectX 7 and performs well in older games.

Mobile Graphics Workstation:

Quadro FX Go1000

The Quadro FX Go1000, based on the Go5700, is for mobile workstations aimed at 3D modeling / rendering and CAD engineers using professional 3D design applications. Certified drivers have optimizations for professional applications which provide the Quadro FX Go1000 with greater speed, accuracy and stability over a regular Go5700.

Quadro FX Go700

Same purpose as the Quadro FX Go1000 but instead the core is based on the Go5600 line.
